Special classes in September: |

| Moderate/Vigorous: The classes marked Vigorous provide an ever-changing, flowing series of postures and movements linked by an even, rhythmic breath. Most postures are held for only a few breaths before moving on to the next, building internal heat to cleanse the body and focus the mind. The postures will challenge your balance, flexibility, strength, and endurance. The emphasis on steady breathing provides mental focus and equanimity throughout. The classes marked Moderate also flow from posture to posture, but they do so more slowly, and we often pause to focus on the details of certain postures for a longer period. Both levels are open to new beginners, with options provided for all so you can adapt the intensity of the class to your needs on any given day. |
| YogaPilates combines the best of yoga and pilates, so you can focus on strengthening your core while also lengthening and invigorating the entire body. These classes are mixed level—the instructor offers options for both brand-new beginners and seasoned students in the same class, in an ongoing flow of movement. So, start by taking the beginner options. When you're ready, at your own pace, try the intermediate options— maybe today, maybe next month or next year. You can make the class just the right level of challenge and ease that you need each day. You will soon notice changes in what you can do and how you feel! |
| Class Descriptions All classes are open to new beginners. |
| Yoga focuses on more detailed instruction for individual yoga postures, breathing practices, and relaxation techniques. We approach each posture as a series of actions and sensations that we can explore on both the obvious and the more subtle levels of awareness. Postures are modified and props are used to make the practice therapeutic for each individual, allowing you let go of your habits of movement and tension to experience new possibilities in your yoga practice. |
| Tuesday, September 23, 7-8pm: Restorative Yoga offers you a chance to sit and recline, using small movements that gently open tight areas (like the neck, upper back, lower back, shoulders, and hips). Relax in long, luxurious poses on the floor while your body is supported with blankets and other props. Let gravity do the work while you release tension and allow the mind to become calm. Great for relieving stress after a long week! |
| What is Yoga? Yoga combines postures and movements with conscious breathing to simultaneously strengthen and stretch. The main style of yoga in our classes offers a steady, continuous flow of movement called vinyasa [vin- ya-sa]. In the process, we:

| What is Pilates? Pilates [pih-lah-teez] is a set of exercises that increases core strength. A strong core is absolutely crucial for good posture and spinal health, making you look taller and leaner as well as helping keep your back pain-free. This core area includes:
flexibility through the chest, shoulders, and torso. Each area is isolated in turn to develop body awareness and pelvic/spinal alignment. Our classes combine the classical Pilates exercises with recent innovative variations that target the precise areas where we tend to lose strength over time. |

| Tuesday, September 16, 5-5:45pm: Yin Yoga is a quiet but intense form of yoga that asks you to sit still as the connective tissue of the body slowly, steadily regains its full elasticity, restoring full range of motion to hips and other tight areas. Familiar postures feel different when held in the yin method. |
